A top Health Care Worker goal is to make life easier for the Care Recipient, yourself, and others who are involved. One way to do that is to create a consistent daily schedule. This helps your life run more smoothly. In addition, sticking to a routine might free up some mental energy to help you find more ways to take breaks and take care of yourself. We explain what schedules there are and share examples of what you might be doing.
Full Day: Live-In 07:00 AM – 07:00 AM
Live-in Health Care Workers are paid a flat daily rate for 24 hrs. Usually between $160.00-$250.00 per day, for a Care Seeker to have a Health Care Worker at a live-in rate (which is usually less than the hourly rate) is required that the live in Health Care Worker have at least 8 hours of rest and sleep during the night. And if the Health Care Worker isn't able to sleep through the night, then it should be the full awake night shift rate. Discuss with the Care Seeker to find out what you expect of the family when it comes to meals. Most Health Care Workers will buy and prepare their own food if required.
Overnights
Awake Night Shift
An awake night shift is where the Health Care Worker is expected to remain awake at night to assist with nighttime duties such as toileting or agitation. Note: Generally, awake night shift rates are more than the daytime rate.
Sleeping Night Shift
Sleeping night shift means that a Health Care Worker should be available in case of an incident, but that they don’t need to be awake and alert at all times. Note: Generally, sleeping night shift rates are less than the daytime rate.
Day Time
Mornings 0:700 AM to 12:00 PM
Part of a regular morning routine for your client might be to start at 0:800 AM, help them use the toilet, shower, brush teeth, and comb their hair. Then, change from pajamas to regular clothes and sit down for a hot breakfast of oatmeal, apples, and tea.
Lunch 12:00 PM-06:00 PM
Afternoons would be to have lunch, use the toilet, have a nap, or be reserved for audiobooks, puzzles, or no-fail household tasks. Enjoy a nice walk in the park every Sunday afternoon, meet up with friends or have lunch at a favorite restaurant once a month.
Evenings 06:00 PM -10:00 PM
There’s nothing like a home-cooked meal at the end of a long day. Health Care Workers skilled in cooking can put together something that’ll go down as a treat. Health Care Workers who help support a person with dementia in the evenings can help if they are experiencing sundowning by keeping busy with another activity to something as simple as giving their hand a squeeze. After supper, the client is assisted to get to bed at the same time every night and help them change into their nightwear and brush their teeth. They might prepare them a warm drink or a hot water bottle, or simply leave them to a spot of reading.
Regular Weekly Visits
Your Care Seeker has you doing ongoing visits to help with overnights, mornings, lunch, evenings or as a live-in.
Shift Call Outs
Care Seekers or Enterprise Partners can post shifts when there is a shortage due to illness, vacations, unforeseen emergencies, respite or for unexpected medical appointments. This is suited to Health Care Workers who like to pick up extra shifts on an as-needed basis while enjoying the overall experience and flexibility.
